FOMO
Fear of missing out. Although FOMO has always existed, it is probably more prevalent in our time than before. For some reason, people seem to fear it now more than before. Whether we have heard the term or are not really familiar with it, we all have experienced it. It refers to the anxiety that someone may experience when afraid that they might be missing out on a fun or exciting activity.
When people experience FOMO, they may perceive some regret given the activity they have decided to pick. At present, this has been exacerbated by social media, given that people often show off how they are living their best life (whatever that means) and always having such a fun time. This could be the best vacation in the best beach or place on earth, or the best job in the world, or just hanging out with the best group of friends. There’s something (or a lot) to say about all this, but that’s not my point here. My point is that every time that we choose to do something, we are ignoring or just not choosing hundreds of other potential activities that we could have engaged with. That is, we are missing out on many things on purpose. And indeed, that’s probably how it should be. Given that our days only have 24 hours and our time is truly valuable, we probably should not be afraid of missing out.
